If your housemate is eating your food, you’re not alone. Now I didn’t realise this was as common a problem as it is, but a quick scroll through Reddit’s /badroommates says otherwise.
So perhaps this is a common experience. The real question is: is it actually that serious? Reddit would suggest…yes. Yes it is. So let’s take it seriously.
Hands up if you’ve been here: you didn’t sign up for an extra housemate but somewhere between “meet my partner” and “they might stay over sometimes”, you’ve accidentally gained a full-time extra roommate who somehow has better access to your TV than you do.
With housing affordability being what it is, many renters don’t have the luxury of living alone. So instead of escaping the situation entirely, the focus becomes: how do you make this liveable? And maybe even peaceful?
Finding the right housemates can make or break your shared living experience. Most people fixate on the obvious stuff – location, price, whether the bathroom is big enough – and forget that the people you’re living with deserve just as much thought as the property itself.
After living with 20+ housemates, I can tell you this: without systems, a shared home is as tidy as its messiest person.
Most people aren’t expecting a show home – they just want a clean, uncluttered space that feels calm after a busy day.
